The most cliché answer would be that I did not pick digital marketing but digital marketing picked me. As cheesy as it sounds I feel like that is pretty much true.
In my early teens I was addicted to finding what I enjoyed most. Art was fun but just a hobby, music was catchy but I never saw myself pursing a career in that , and business studies were interesting but too technical. I thought I was a lost cause and I will definitely never find what stuck to me most. Back then I was not really familiar to digital marketing or even marketing itself. The time came around where I started volunteering to build up my portfolio in order to apply to universities. But I felt it was not enough so that is when I started searching for a summer Internship that might broaden my horizons. I was sending my CV to every company possible. And luckily enough I landed my first ever internship at a marketing company nearby. I did all the research possible but I did not feel like that was enough. I heard of marketing in my high schools business courses but I never felt a true connection so I was nervous and unsure. The interview rolled around and my heart was fluttering until I sat down to see friendly faces. The office seemed connected and everything had such a creative hint to it. At the end of the interview the interviewer took her time to explain what is being done at the office. She spoke about research, graphic design, social media and so much more... Right then and there I thought of all my interests whether it was arts, music, or even business, it was as if this industry had a little bit of everything I like. I spent a good two whole months at the office and I officially knew what I wanted to work towards. How could I not love it? So, preparing to research what universities I will apply to was easy since I have found a clear major I wanted to pursue. I never thought it would get better than marketing but then digital marketing was brought to my attention. As a tech-savvy person this just made everything a hundred times better. So many more concepts to learn whether it was impressions and analytics or even SEO. I was fortunate enough to find a digital marketing university in my country so I can get started on my journey of becoming a digital marketer. I remember how I secretly dreaded volunteering and going to internships because when I was younger I felt lost and as if these activities were just like any other school activity. High school never really explains the importance of experience. They describe it as a way to build a portfolio for university but they never mention the most important thing. Getting experience teaches you more about yourself and who you are. It teaches you what you really enjoy doing and studying. If I have not went on a volunteering and internship journey I would have never found my passion and I could be studying what I find a generic major and then get employed at a generic place and never be a motivated employee which is what I feel like most teenagers feel forced to grow into. I got lucky that my family that never forced me into a certain study or field. If anything I was encouraged to explore and experiment. What I really want to put an emphasis on is learning your likes and dislikes is essential before and after university. Discover who you are , research, go on adventures , and learn how you want to leave your print on this world.
